Stroll through a neon lit memory lane or discover American history through signs at the American Sign Museum.
The museum preserves and restores signs of all types from the last 100 years. With thousands of signs set up in the museum’s 20,000 square feet, there is something to see no matter where you look. Travel down the Signs on Main Street display for a look at what Main Street America might have looked like. Check out the old Burma-shave signs and make up your own versions! You can visit on your own or take a tour to learn the behind the scenes stories of the signs.
The American Sign Museum began as a labor of love by Tod Swormstedt. When his collection outgrew his storage capability, he founded the museum. It is housed in a historic factory, the old Oesterlein Machine Company-Fashion Frocks, Inc. Complex. The museum is doubling its size as the acquisitions grow. It is a great use for a beautiful building.
The museum hosts private and public events. These include music, poetry slams, and performances by the Cincinnati Ballet.
Neonworks of Cincinnati is a full-time neon sign shop located within the museum. Here, visitors can watch signs being made or repaired. You can even commission a sign for your home or business!
The American Sign Museum offers age appropriate field trips. These tours can be tailored to specific classes. Popular classes include American history, design including color and typefaces, and the science of sign making
